Slang words are words that are understood by a certain group of people. The reason for being in a group could be cultural, religious, linguistic, or country of origin. Slang words are outside the language that is used by most people.
The creation of slang words and expressions is one of the ways that language changes over time. A group will use a certain word and after time, it may become widely used. Then it can become a part of most people’s vocabulary.
Slang words can be abbreviations, taking a word and expanding its meaning, a word with a different meaning, or a totally new word. Some things that slang words are not is: dialect, colloquialism, advertising slogans, jargon, graffiti, catch phrases, or a special language that a secret society makes up and uses.
